One Month Blogging Challenge – Day 10 (My favorite books)

Dearest friends,

Please don’t forget that I’m doing this challenge with Maggie and Angela, so be sure to go over to their blogs and check their answers to the challenge. Today, you have the chance to know what their favorite books are.

I’ve been reading since I can remember. I’ve had always loved books. It become a passion when I was about sixteen. That’s when I made my first library card. It was on my Summer vacation. I didn’t have much to do and nowhere to go, as my mother was working all Summer. I needed to take two buses to get there but that didn’t stop me at all. I would go once a week and bring 10 books. That was the number the library would allow. 5 fiction and 5 non-fiction. For non-fiction I would usually get health related books, general knowledge and facts books, History and science related books. Fiction, always a few novels. Books were really good friends of mine. I would always have a book on me. Teachers would get mad because they would catch me reading in class. When it came to subjects such as Literature and Portuguese, I would be one of the few who would actually read the book. Sometimes I had read it the Summer before, and would read it again once it was assigned to us. When the time to choose where I wanted to go for college, I knew that Literature had to be part of it. So I decided on my degree (Languages, Literature and Cultures) because it seemed that it had everything I was interested in and good at. Once in college, I realized I was really good at English and that I was drawn to all of the American history, literature and culture courses, so I decided that would be my Major. American Studies. I still loved English authors and culture, so English Studies became my minor. Funny story, I had first chosen it to be the other way around, but then I changed according to my interests. My school’s library is the second best in the country and has a wide range of books in English. And so, first year of college, I began to read everything in the original language (for English and American works), no translations. Yes, even Shakespeare. I believe that reading in English helped me in becoming fluent. When I started university I was at a B2 level and I got to a C2, which the native equivalent. And then teaching came into my life.

I needed to tell you this little story, of how I feel in love with books. Now, finally, I’ll get to my favorites.

My favorite books: (and authors)

  1. We share a lot of favourite books. For that reason I really need to find out about the ones I am unfamiliar with!

  2. Awesome picks, Cheila! The Great Gatsby is one of my favorites too, and I’m planning on reading Gone With The Wind for the first time this summer. The cool thing is, I grew up in the town where the author wrote the book 🙂 That town is such a cool city!

  3. I can’t believe we have so much in common. First of all, most times I totally forget you aren’t a native English speaker. Well done to you. I majored in English Literature. My favorite was always 19th century literature. Everything Jane Austen. Everything. Now you’ve got me thinking to go back and reread Mansfield Park. My favorite. I adore the way she characterizes people in all her novels in such a way that we always know that person in real life, or else our minds can create them as vividly as if they truly exist. She’s so good. She penetrates human nature. She has balance and grace and wit. I could go on all day.
I actually decided to do some brain work and tally up your list. It was actually fun. I have read 9 of the books. I have 6 of the books on my bookshelf waiting to be read. And I have 1 book which I started but didn’t finish.

  4. I enjoyed reading the story of how you fell in love with books☺️ I use to read on the school bus and as soon as I got home. I’d even fall asleep with books on the bed lol I wish I could find them all because I can’t remember most of the books I’ve read sadly😞 I know I had some great ones but I moved around so much and left them some family members probably thought they were meaningless. I’ll have to start reading again, a lot more than I had and add new books to my collection, I’ll check out some of these✨

  5. That’s a lot of books! Both you and Maggie are big book lovers, and i was curious to see what would be on your list of favourite books 😄
I haven’t heard of too much of yours, I am a huge Jodi Picoult fan though! 🙂
I may check out some of the other ones you listed too 😄

  6. Wow that is impressive, I have never got far with Jane Austin books or Withering heights or Shakespeare and English is my native language. Jodi Piccoult is more my level and I also like Diane Chamberlin who writes similar style of books.

  7. Great books! I’ve read some but not many of those! I have the Jane Austin collection at home and have always wanted to read it but I struggle a little with the old vocabulary of them a bit which means I get bored trying to work out that it all means

  9. I have not read Eça de Queirós and Isabelle Allende, but all of those others writers have made my life a better one. I used to be like you, Cheila. The one with the story book hidden inside a textbook at the back of the class, the one whose books were hidden by her mother because she thought her child was not reading enough of the prescribed textbooks. How I used to hunt them out, telling myself, “Think like S. Where could she have kept it?” I used to find them out eventually 😉 All of those quotes that you have put here have a special place in my memory too xx

    • My family used to say I was going to go crazy and need glasses for reading so much. I had many books confiscated in class and I can’t tell you how many times I heard the sentence “this is x class, not literature”.

  10. Isn’t reading the best? When people tell me that they don’t enjoy reading, I get a little sad. Haha! In college, I majored in English, so I was constantly reading. I can’t wait to read the few on your list that I haven’t read yet!

I love anything by F Scott Fitzgerald! America in the 1920s really intrigues me, and it must have been such an exciting time to live! I love the elaborateness of the parties and the beautiful clothes and fashions 🙂
    Take care, and happy reading.

  12. Girl, you have so much CLASS!!! I have wanted to read Wuthering heights and the Jane Austen series for forever, but I feel like I haven’t ever had the chance through high school and nursing school (with ALLLL the other reading I was booked-out). Once I get through the HP series for the first time those are next on the list. Also- So sorry I’ve been so MIA! Life has been crazier and more stressful than ever before. I’m thankful for a couple days now to blog and catch up on blogs. Have a great week, sweet girl! XO

  15. I’ve loved books since I was a small child too, and I remember reading Little Women. If you like Pride and Prejudice, you might be interested in the post I wrote about our visit to Jane Austen’s house: https://unseen-beauty.com/2017/04/22/jane-austen/
Wuthering Heights was one of our texts for English literature at school, but I found it hard to like any of the characters, which in a way prevented me from getting in to the book…

    • Oh, thank you. I’ll definitely read your article. I like them both. Cathy and Heathcliff. They are not good people, the only good think they have in them is their love for each, which makes me like them, despite everything 🙂
