My answers:
Do you celebrate Christmas?
I do. We’re catholic. I mean, both our families are catholic. Rui and I believe in God and have faith but we don’t actually commit to a specific religion or church. If we’re asked, we do identify as catholic, though.
How was Christmas?
Absolute crap to be honest. Family drama, my sick grandmother, some annoying family members, the whole deal.
What was your favorite thing about Christmas?
When it was over.
Where did you spend it?
Christmas eve at my mother’s house with my Rui, my mother, stepfather, sister, grandmother and uncle. Christmas day with my in-laws with Rui, my mother and father-in-law, my brother in law, uncle and aunt (Rui’s but I call them uncle and aunt anyway) and grandmother and grandfather (Rui’s, but I call them grandma and grandpa anyway).
Was there something you disliked/hated?
Need I say more?
Tell me about one of your Christmas traditions (not your family’s, not your parents’, YOURS).
I throw a Christmas Party for my friends every year on the 23rd of December and we do Secret Santa.
Did you get presents? Do you have a favorite?
Rui and I don’t usually get gifts to each other. I think we stopped doing it when we moved in together. However, this year, we decided we would get 10€ and see how many cute and fun things we could surprise each other with. Funny thing, we went to the same store separately and chose the exact same gift bag for the other, by accident. Nice coincidence.
I got a few very nice gifts. My family got us both H&M gift cards and paid 50% of our new washer as a gift. My mom-in-law gave us a really nice, sturdy and fancy pot and a REALLY wonderful bag for me. Rui’s aunt got us a set of towels and his grandma got us a set of sheets.
From our secret Santa we got a pair of fluffy sleepers and a pink notebook (me) and this ping pong kit to make our dinner table into a ping pong table (him).
Are you still recovering from Christmas or getting all excited for New Year’s Eve?
Gosh, I’m definitely still getting over Christmas but I have had to start thinking about New Year’s Eve, even if it’s just to decide if I’m doing nothing. We though about throwing a party but most of our friends are already busy (that’s what you get for asking 5 days before) and our family members always complain we live in the middle of nowhere so, I have no plans or any idea at all.
Congrats Joy!
I spent Christmas at home (I’ve just done my Christmas blog post where I said about my gifts and posted a photo of the turkey – which turned out really well, I’m proud of myself!) We don’t really have traditions per se, just ways of doing things, like presents, then small breakfast, lunch between 1-2pm, boardgames, plenty of alcohol and some kind of stand-up/comedy/action/light hearted film in the evening. Now I’m just catching up on blogging! 🙂
How was your Christmas Chey? Hope you had a lovely time xx

Well, mine was not very good but I’m honestly used to the drama. I’m actually looking forward to hosting Christmas at our home but it has yet to happen. I have yet to read your post, I mean, I haven’t read anyone’s posts in ages. I’ve been so busy since September. I’m so glad you had a good Christmas. I’m proud of you, I’ve never cooked a whole turkey lol

Aww, sounds like it was a nice quiet Christmas 🙂
Rory and I still get each other gifts for birthdays and Christmas, but that’s it. We used to do Valentines, anniversaries and all that, but at some point we both agreed we couldn’t be bothered 😀

Couldn’t be bothered sounds like a wonderful way of dealing with things, haha. You’re both so laidback that it makes perfect sense.

Indeed they are. “Couldn’t be bothered” describes our feelings about Christmas presents for each other. We already spend so much money for others, why spend some more when we can gift each other all year round, which we kind of do and it’s way more special. We do birthdays, though. I cannot remember if we do anniversaries or if we just go out to dinner. This year we decided we were going to be a little selfish and buy 0 presents. We have spent so much in the past. I was on medical leave for 6 months this year, which means we were living on one income. We still spend at least 150€ a month on my health and every appliance seemed to be out to get us this year which meant a new stove, phone for me, dishwasher and washer. We are always very generous with family and friends on every occasion but, this year, they just had to understand our position.

I remember the appliances and their many rebellions this year. They’re of the same villainous blood as my car. Bunch of backstabbers these machines.

Oh yes, damn car. 2017 was not a good year for machines. If I have to buy anything next year, even a toaster, I’m moving to the mountains and living of the land, cooking with fire

Hahaha, I’ve considered that a dozen times this year. One more thing breaks down and it’s the mountains for me. Me and the kids will join you and we can live the hippie life.

Not much, no. Maybe I’m just not used to it

Haha, it does make things even more laidback as we don’t have to stress with buying gifts or whatever. We do sometimes randomly surprise each other with little gifts. Mostly of the food variety. 😀

I think we have never done Valentines. We feel it’s every couple’s day which kind of ruins it for us because it feels forced and unnatural lol

I’ve always thought the idea was nice in theory, but it’s pretty much shoved in your face with the marketing that it’s annoying. Definitely feels forced and unnatural.

I don’t celebrate Christmas, never have, and I don’t mind it one bit. After that drama-filled Christmas with family, I definitely think that you and Rui should take the money and energy you would spend on New Years and do something cool, fun, romantic together just the two of you. Start the year with a cleanse of all the headache and stress. Even dinner at a really nice restaurant may be a nice change and no clean up afterwards. No dirty dishes is a blessing girlie.

I know, honey. Although I don’t think your family is half as crazy as mine. Do you know what I would actually like to do for New Year’s? Nothing lol staying on the couch, fireplace on, special meal, and that’s it. But mom is having a party and her young goddaughter is coming so I’m tempted. We never have kids over for parties lol

I say screw the kids and stay home, lol. You guys have a fireplace?? So jealous. It’s too hot for me to use one here, but I’m still jealous! You’re making me want to go find snow and lay on a cozy faux fur blanket in front of a fireplace.

Weirdly your day 22 does not appear in my reader so don’t know if same for others. Don’t be disheartened it could be that or just people busy which can be anytime common at christmas.
