You know me. As a blogger, I mean. I’ve written every day for the past (almost) 6 months. Most days, I write or publish more than one post. What happens when such an active blogger doesn’t feel like blogging?
- Take a break, for as long as you need.
- Never feel guilty for not writing. This is, after all, a hobby. Not your job.
- Look for a cause. Yes, there’s usually one. Maybe you lack inspiration, maybe you’re feeling lazy or maybe something about the blogging world is bothering you. You need to know why you feel the need to get away from it.
- Don’t care about numbers. They will obviously go down when you’re not blogging. You can handle that. You can either have a couple of posts prepared for such situations or you can do what I did: re-post old posts. You are getting content out during your break.
- Don’t answer comments if you don’t want to. Always answer them, your readers deserve that, but it doesn’t have to be an immediate task. They can wait until you’re active again.
- Along with comments, don’t fell like you NEED to answer emails or social media related anything. You are on a break, you can take advantage of the blogging hiatus and do a social media detox. We need them.
- Think of your break as a vacation. Don’t brainstorm ideas, don’t think about your blog at all. Once you get back at it, you’ll have plenty of time. And you will miss it, which will help with your blogging tiredness.
- Don’t pick a date to be back. You shouldn’t feel like you have a deadline, because you don’t. Setting a date can cause stress.
- Talk with your blogging best friends. Do you have some? It’s amazing to have a small group of blogger best friends to guide and give advice to each other. I have a group of girls that I trust, adore and talk openly outside of the blogging world. If you don’t have such “squad” I can teach you how to get one, by meeting people, interacting with them in different ways and develop a real friendship.
- If you don’t feel like it, don’t even read blogs. Just say away from the whole thing. If you have a strong and supportive community they will understand.
What really happened in my case: I was busy and had a lot of my plate but, mostly, I was tired of blogging. For several reasons, I just didn’t want to do it. It was that simple. I didn’t want to write. So I didn’t. I just gave myself time, haven’t been active for over a week, just publishing old posts from my earlier months. I haven’t been answering comments or even reading all of the blogs I follow. I’ve been only posting on Instagram, because it’s easy and doesn’t require any writing (besides a small description).
We all feel the need to be consistent with our blogs and we all feel guilty when we aren’t. We even apologize, sometimes. But we shouldn’t. This is informal blogging, you owe nothing to anyone. You’re free to work on your blog whenever you feel like it. it’s your space, and you must enjoy it.
Has this ever happen to you? Just simply being tired of blogging?
I would love to read your stories/opinion.
Thank you so much for reading. I’ve missed you.
Love, Chey.
I really struggle to be consistent with my blog as I only seem to like writing when I’m a) in a great, motivated mood or b) something’s really rattled my cage and I need to rant about it. Those in the middle moods – I just seem to have writers/bloggers block! Think I needed to read this to remind myself not to be apologetic over that. Great post btw. 🙂

You don’t need to. You can write as you wish and when you feel inspired. No one is super inspired and full of ideas all the time, even if you are a very creative person. Don’t look at them as writers block. Give yourself some grace and time and see them as breaks or breathing room 🙂 Thank you so much for reading!! And welcome to my blog.

We all do, I think. Blogging can be stressful and time consuming and very demanding, almost like a second job. Who wants 2 jobs? lol

Haha so funny you say that because my husband calls this my second job.

Hey Cheila, it’s great for you to talk openly about this because so many of us feel that need to step away and then feel guilty. I love what you said about the people who care and genuinely enjoy our blogs will be supportive when we return. I’ve just gone through this situation in the past week. Probably my worst yet! Thanks for reminding me to enjoy off time. Also, great tip about reposting older content. 💜

Great post Cheila! I know there have been times when I don’t feel like blogging and have done so anyway. Not my best work! I’ll definitely consider just not posting in the future if I don’t feel like it. 💖

Perfect time for me to read this post! Due to a bad break up, I had fallen off my posting after expanding my readers and being more active than ever. Now that I am back, your post has made me feel more welcome back in the blogging world and secure about my fall off.
Great read!! Thanks for the advice!

This is so good to read! I’ve just been through a stage of not wanting to blog, not having the energy or inspiration to and I really beat myself up about it! Reading this has made me realise, you’re totally right, it’s a hobby and should be fun, it’s ok to take a break. Thank you

I agree, Sometimes out minds are filled with so many ideas that we can create million blog posts but a time comes when you can not even think to write one word.

I definitely agree with “look for a cause” point”. When I felt under the weather, and wasn’t really inspired to do anything, I tried to analyze what’s going on in my life. Lacking attention from and communication with my best friend was a reason for me, I stopped pitting myself and reached out to my friends, especially those who share my interests and inspire me, and that got me back on track.

Thank you so much for this, Cheila. ❤ I've been feeling like my blog's getting worst and I just don't feel like commenting on any posts, which SUCKS. Thank you for your advice! ❤

This is an awesome post Cheila!! I’m sure it’s going to help so many people (judging by the comments, it already has), blogging is meant to be fun, a hobby. Sometimes though it can take over, and then it’s less fun, and stepping back is sometimes the best thing to do, or you may burn out. Then when you’re ready, you come back in and hopefully the fun and passion for it is back 😀

Breaks are good to take. Though I have to confess I feel like I have been on a permanent break since summer started. And I post on the blog when I need a break from my break. 😛

This was such a good reminder to all bloggers! I arrived about 10 days ago to Chile where I will be working for 6 weeks. While I really missed blogging, I knew it was important to focus on myself and getting comfortable here. Now that I am I hope I can be more active again!

Of course. It shouldn’t feel like a task. A break provides rest and maybe even new ideas or motivation. I’ve taken two or three breaks in sex months. If I need another, I’ll take it. Thank you so much for reading, Shelby. xx

So much great advice here. I just post verses so it’s not like I have to create the content of my blog. But as it has grown, it’s the moderating that’s taken on a life of it’s own. It takes me about 15 minutes total to type up the Bible verses, pick a picture to go with them, and publish it. It’s the other time spent that can be consuming. But you are right, I’ve learned that it will be here when I get ready to do it.

I’ve definitely had those periods before and am sure I will again. Sometimes life happens and sometimes moods just make writing/creating impossible.

Great post, Cheila! I can relate so much to this situation. I think every blogger experiences it once, a lack of motivation. I think it’s important to give yourself a break, either if that’s not blogging at all or if that means blogging less or less complex posts.
