My new following rules and some blogging thoughts!! (New followers, this post is mainly for you)

Hey guys,

I’m sorry this is my third post today.

I wanted to tell you that I understand that, because people are really busy, I don’t expect you to read so many posts. I usually write 2 a day, now 3 because of the blogging challenge I’m doing. I understand that most people don’t have the time to read that many, and that’s okay. You can skip them and read only the ones you’re really interested in.

Once I go back to work in a few months, I won’t have time to write or read as much as I do now. My blogging hours will have to be cut way back. It’s just impossible to do it all.

I want to tell you about followers and my following rules.

A month ago I was following more than 1,000 people. Crazy, I know, right? I wanted to follow back everyone that followed my blog because I thought it was only fair to do so. Then I realized I couldn’t possibly be following so many people and I cut it back to 700. Still too many, right?

With time, I came to realize that, even though I have a good number of followers, they don’t always interact with me. Some of them don’t do it at all. So, why should I? Why should I waste my time reading and commenting on some blogs if the bloggers didn’t do the same for me? It’s not that I need you to always read and comment and be on top of everything. Far from it. I just want you to show interest, as I do regarding your articles. So I decided that I would not follow those that don’t pay any attention to my writing, and ignore me when I comment on their blogs (which is extremely rude). It’s not my favorite thing to do and I still feel guilty about it, but I had a big purge the other day and now I’m down to following 300 people. Am I open to follow more people? Sure. As long as they cooperate and are a part of this community as active, kind and supportive people. I haven’t been following back my recent followers and for that I am really sorry. I would like to give them a chance, of course. One of these days I will go through everyone’s blog and follow the ones I do like.

So my new following back rules are:

  • Please don’t dump a link on my comment section and just say “follow me back”. It won’t work. If you want me to take in interest on your blog, at least introduce yourself, please!
  • Don’t follow me and then disappear. I won’t follow you back if you do so.
  • Don’t follow me and then unfollow once I’ve followed you back. That’s just rude.
  • If I haven’t been paying enough attention to your blog or if I have missed some posts that you would like me to read, you’re more than welcome to drop me a link and ask me to do so.
  • If you blog once a year, it’s unlikely that I will follow you. When I last checked I was following so many people who weren’t even active anymore. Kind of frustrating. You get excited about a blog and then people just don’t write anymore.
  • If you blog about something that is offensive to me or that I cannot simply support I won’t follow you, obviously. I have unfollowed people because of sexist remarks, fat shaming and such.
  • You’re always welcome to call my attention to your blog and your articles if you’re a new reader. I will always read something you ask me to and give you my feedback.

Some random blogging thoughts:

  • If you ever need to talk about something, if you relate to one of my posts and would like to talk to me about your story, you’re welcome to email me. Or use any form of contact really. I may not answer right away, but I always do.
  • Some people have asked me for advice. Maybe because my blog has been growing at what could be considered a “fast” rate? I don’t know. I try my best to help those who come to me with blogging questions and asking for advice. I’m still a new blogger, but I will make sure to tell you what has worked for me. No secrets here. So feel free to contact me if you think I might help you!! Is there anything I can do for you?
  • I’m always open to collaborations and guest posts. You just need to email me your ideas and we can definitely arrange something.
  • I don’t mind at all when people ask me to promote their blogs or a specific post. Feel free to do so, if you are struggling.
  • If I have a certain Award and you don’t, I’m happy to nominate you;

New Followers:

To my new followers, who I haven’t been paying any attention, I would like to apologize. With so many people following, I stopped following back until I have the chance to go through your blog and read a few articles. Today I ask: Is there someone who has been following and reading me who I have yet to follow back or even read their blog? I would be so happy if you left me a link that I can check. I intend to go through all new follower’s blogs but it would be quicker if you left me a link. I guess that’s it. Oh, and thank you so much for following me. It means so much. Every new person brings me joy. I love meeting you, I love the interaction. Always feel free to introduce yourself and just chat!!

Fellow bloggers, what are your thoughts regarding these matters?

Do you follow many people?

Do you always follow back?

I would love to know who you deal with following and unfollowing.

Thank you so much for reading!

xx

  1. You are like Wonder Woman when it comes to blogging. lol I feel so overwhelmed trying to keep up with everyone’s posts and I only follow a fraction of the people you do! It’s so hard to keep up!

  2. This is such a timely post for me. I am relatively new and I tend to follow those who follow me. But you are right, it is nearly impossible to keep up with oodles of blogs. I have about a hundred followers and I follow about twice that. It’s hard to keep up and still be writing posts. I think I will be more judicious in the future. Though I have to make one comment about multiple likes in a row. Sometimes I will scroll down and read a number of posts before I go back and like them. I’m not sure if others do that, but now that I know it is bothersome, I’ll stop at each like button 🙂

    • No, my dear!! The whole bothersome thing is when you know the person is liking without reading. If you go back to the posts, you’re doing nothing wrong. I do the same thing. I like to know I want to read it, then go back and actual read and comment. It’s just a way of managing things

  3. These are great rules!
Those things are all so annoying, and I can especially relate to the comment at the top. I’d rather someone read and enjoy my posts (and forget to like) than just continuously like without reading because it’s just meaningless numbers.

  4. This was such a lovely read, I have to agree with you Cheila. I think it’s far worse on Instagram where someone follows, you follow them back to support them ( I pretty much follow all my wordpress crew) and pfff they unfollow and disappear! I think that gets to me the most. I can’t believe these companies with big numbers also do the same and it’s very unprofessional. I usually just unfollow them back too xo

  5. I try and follow back:) I am new to this and learning the ins and outs and this was very informative for me. Thank you 🙂

  6. These are some really good guidelines to follow (I think I may need to borrow your way of thinking!) I think you’re being really fair. Shouldn’t follow people who aren’t active or who don’t engage with you back. Besides, engaging is half the fun (if not more than half!) I’m gonna go ahead and follow you now because I like this post and the layout of your blog is very pretty! 🙂

  7. I also got a hard lesson in the whole “follow for follow” thing on here. Just follow who you want, regardless of whether or not they interact with you or even follow you. I’m a little selfish haha now I follow those whose writing I want to read, that’s it. Half of the people I’ve followed don’t follow me, and I don’t follow half of my followers.

  8. I only follow the blogs that I like since I read every article on my WP feed.

Also, I won’t follow people who say “I followed you so follow me back”. They are treating this like Twitter or Instagram… they don’t even have a clue on what they’re doing…

    • It’s the same shit with Instagram. It makes me so mad. I’ve been between 284 and 291 followers for weeks. People keep following then unfollowing. Come on? I don’t do that to people, it’s annoying and offensive

      • This practice is quite common on instagram and Twitter. That’s why there are so many “follow for follow” groups there. I don’t really know what’s the point of it all aside from them giving off an illusion of authority and feeding their already inflated ego. Besides, if you are planning for long term, that approach is useless.

  9. I sooo agree with this Cheila! Im on Twitter and it’s the same. How rude I think….if you want to follow me then that is great. If you don’t like my site enough to stay after you have followed me then don’t bother in the first place! I want engaged people who want to read my feed/blog. Like you, I try to engage with my readers and comment on each comment and look at new blogs but it is definitely more difficult the more followers you get. Good luck! X

  11. Cheila you are so sweet and you shouldn’t have to justify anything you do. If you don’t want to follow a blog then don’t. You don’t have to answer to anyone or tell anyone why. You are one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. Keep doing what you’re doing. ❤️

  12. I still can’t believe you was following 1000 blogs 😅. I like to follow a maximum of 200 now 😊. I went through everyone I was following: some people hadn’t uploaded in months, so I just unfollowed them

    • I was really dumb about when started. Thought I should follow everyone back. Now I stick with the blogs I love. If they don’t follow back that’s okay. I’m at about 200 too. And it’s hard to manage anyway lol

  13. Currently I am following everyone who has followed me, since I’m new to the scene. But even since I started almost 2 months ago, there are so many people that do not interact on my page and I try my hardest to interact with others. Good rules, I hope I have that many followers/following, and I have to implicate some of these too! 😀

  14. I try to follow everyone that follows me, or I’ll search for blogs that have posted about similar things, but then I realize that only about 25% of the people were following me back! It’s very frustrating if I put my time into someone’s blog and then they can’t reciprocate even a couple of likes back! I completely agree with this post.

  15. I wish I could like this 1,000 times. My theory as to why your blog is growing so quickly is 2 fold: quality content and interaction. Your posts are always good and you make an effort to reach out to other bloggers. I try to post quality content and while I am pretty good at responding to comments on my own posts, I’m not so great at keeping up with commenting on other blogs. Maybe it is time for me to do a clean up of my own follow list. ❤
